Rick Springfield recently discovered he suffered a brain injury … in 2000.

The “Jessie’s Girl” singer tells People the discovery was made after he had a whole-body MRI scan, noting the injury was the result of an onstage fall that happened in Las Vegas over two decades ago.

“I fell 25 feet, hit my head and then wood came down and hit my head, and then my head hit the stage again,” the 75-year-old shares. “I thought I had just broken my wrist, but on the scan I found out I have some brain damage from the fall, so I’m working on trying to repair that.”

Springfield says he likes knowing everything he can about his health, good or bad, which isn’t something his father preferred.

“He thought he had stomach cancer for years and never got it checked out,” he says. “When he finally collapsed one day at home, they found out it was an ulcer that burst, and he died from the loss of blood. It could have been fixed if he had gotten it checked out.”

“That was a giant message to me: If you want to live long, you have to be prepared for some bad news now and then,” he explains. “I could find out I have terminal cancer tomorrow and be dead in a year, but I can only do all I can do.”

But Springfield is still fit enough to be performing for fans. His next show is happening March 19 in Macon, Georgia, and this summer he’ll head out on the I Want My ’80s tour with John Waite, Wang Chung, Paul Young and John Cafferty. A complete list of dates can be found at RickSpringfield.com.
